History of Primary Education in Tahilla

History page.jpg

Scoil Eoin, Tahilla first opened its doors to the community in 1967 following on from the closure of the Blackwater Bridge National School and the Direenanave National School. The site was donated by Patrick Egan, Tahilla. The principal teacher was Miss Maura Nash and her assistant was Miss Mary Hayes. Mrs. Joan Rice replaced Mrs. Mary O’Sullivan (née Hayes) in 1970 and taught there until June 1989. Johanna O’Sullivan joined Mrs. Maura Hussey on the staff in March 1990.

Work began on an extension in August 2008. The school relocated to the Sneem Hotel on the 23rd of February 2009 and the children moved back into the school on the 5th of May 2009. The extension consisted of a staffroom, special education room, office and a large general-purpose room. Work on the parking area and the wheelchair accessible ramp was completed as part of the extension project.

Scoil Eoin provided education here, under the patronage of the Catholic Diocese of Kerry, for over 50 years. In August 2019, the school was reconfigured and became a Community National School under the patronage of Kerry Education and Training Board. Under its new designation as Tahilla Community National School, the school was officially opened on 1st September 2019. Community National Schools are state supported, co-educational, multi-denominational primary schools underpinned by the core values of Excellence in Education, Care, Equality, Community and Respect. Tahilla CNS is committed to providing high quality inclusive education to all its pupils in close collaboration with parents and the school community.

As part of a programme of refurbishment and improvement works assisted by Kerry ETB and supported by the Department of Education, the windows of the school are to be replaced this summer. The school staff and the Board of Management look forward to welcoming the children back in September 2021 to our newly refurbished building.
